Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Km 82 – Wayllabamba

Distance: ~12 km (7.5 miles)
Duration: 5–6 hours
Elevation Gain: 2,720m → 3,000m

  • Early morning pickup from Cusco, drive to Ollantaytambo for breakfast.
  • Arrive at Km 82 (Piscacucho), the official Inca Trail starting point.
  • Hike along the Urubamba River, passing Llaqtapata, an ancient Incan site.
  • Reach the first campsite at Wayllabamba, surrounded by Andean valleys.
  • Enjoy dinner and rest for the challenging second day.

Day 2: Wayllabamba – Dead Woman’s Pass – Pacaymayo

Distance: ~12 km (7.5 miles)
Duration: 6–7 hours
Elevation Gain: 3,000m → 4,215m → 3,600m

  • Begin a steep ascent through cloud forests and Andean landscapes.
  • Reach the highest point: Dead Woman’s Pass (Warmiwañusca) at 4,215m.
  • Descend to Pacaymayo Valley for the second campsite.
  • Dinner and a well-earned rest after the toughest day.

Day 3: Pacaymayo – Runkurakay – Phuyupatamarca – Wiñay Wayna

Distance: ~16 km (10 miles)
Duration: 8–9 hours
Elevation Gain: 3,600m → 3,950m → 2,650m

  • Visit Runkurakay, an ancient Incan outpost.
  • Climb to the second pass (3,950m), then descend to Sayacmarca ruins.
  • Pass through the Inca Tunnel and reach Phuyupatamarca (“Town Above the Clouds”).
  • Descend to Wiñay Wayna, the final campsite with stunning terraces.

Day 4: Wiñay Wayna – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Distance: ~5 km (3 miles)
Duration: 2–3 hours
Elevation Gain: 2,650m → 2,430m

  • Pre-dawn hike to Inti Punku (Sun Gate) to catch sunrise over Machu Picchu.
  • Walk down into Machu Picchu, explore the citadel with a guided tour.
  • Take the bus down to Aguas Calientes for lunch.
  • Train back to Ollantaytambo, then return to Cusco by bus.
