Transcordillera

Many treks visit sections of the Cordillera Real, this itinerary covers 200km across the entire range. It begins in the town of Sorata at the northern face of Illampu and ends on the eastern side of Huayna Potosi in the village of Chacapampa. A spectacular trek with an average of 5-6 hours trekking each day.

Itinerary

DAY ONE
Departure from La Paz down to the valley of Sorata. A gentle start, five hours up to the Estancia of Lakatia at 3,800m, where camp will be set.

DAY TWO
Time to take on the first pass of 4,800m, after which we descend into the community de Ancoma at 4,200m.

DAY THREE
Our second pass is at 4,500m, and takes us into the community of Cocoyo, again at 4,200m.

DAY FOUR
From Cocoyo we take on a more gentle pass (4,750m approx) and dip into yet another valley, where we will camp in the village of Chacolpaya at 4,300m.

DAY FIVE
A spectacular pass at 5,000 m. between the mountains of Negruni and the Warawarani range awaits us today, before descending into Palca at 4,200 m. approx

DAY SIX
The easiest pass of the trek today, at 4,700m taking us to the village of Lloco Lloconi (4,300 m.)

DAY SEVEN
Continue Trekking with a spectacular view of the Janco Laya peak while we cross the Mollo pass at 5,000 m. finally we camp Laguna Kotia at 4,460 m

DAY EIGHT
From Laguna K’otia, we will trek over Contador pass at 4,800m until we arrive at Laguna Ajuani (4,450 m), where we will make camp for the night.

DAY NINE
Another two passes today(!). The first pass takes us to Laguna Janchallani (4,850 m) and the sencond (4,950 m) on to Laguna Juri Khota (4,400 m).

DAY TEN
We will startoff from Laguna Juri Khota and take on the Austria pass at 5,100 m. from there we descend towards Laguna Chiar Khota (4,600 m.) to camp. This location is also the base camp for any climbing expeditions into the Condoriri range.

DAY ELEVEN
Continuing over two further passes, we reach the base of the Maria Lloco peak. Camp at 4,600m

DAY TWELVE
Our final pass (5,000m) and day of trekking, around the base of the mighty Huayna Potosi. Here, your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to La Paz for a well earned shower and beer!

NOTES
This trek can be extended up to 17 days, which takes you all the way to Coroico. Alternatively, you can choose to do part of the trek (days 1-10 for example, or days 10-13). Please contact us for quotes on any of these alternatives.

Equipment

Trekking Kit List

Provided by Bolivian Mountains

  • Tents (2 person, North Face or similar)
  • Thermarest and roll mat
  • Cooking utensils (stoves, pans, plates, cups etc.)
  • Dining tent.

  • Backpack (25-30lts recommended size)
  • Kit bag or larger backpack for bulk of kit (porters, mules or llamas carry)
  • Sleeping bag (3-4 seasons)
  • Walking boots
  • Torch/flashlight (with spare batteries)
  • Waterproofs – tops and bottoms
  • Sun hat/cap and warm headware
  • Gloves
  • Clothes for temperatures from -5ºC to 26ºC (treks generally vary from high to low altitudes)
